CNN —Romance was in the air at London’s St. Pancras station on Tuesday, and not just because burgeoning power couple Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner were spotted returning from a trip to Paris. Beyond their similar leather jackets, there was something nostalgic, even sentimental about their looks. Turner wheeled a silver Rimowa cabin case decked out with a smorgasbord of luggage stickers. The fashion for luggage patches began around the 1900s — they were typically offered by grand, palatial hotels. “In this age of nostalgia… I say bring back the travel sticker,” wrote the New York Times in 1971, insisting that the colorful decorations are key to evoking pleasant memories and standing out from the crowd.

Anya Firestone’s job as a luxury tour guide in Paris has brought her to many rarefied corners of the city. But only recently did she do something that countless locals and visitors have done over the last 130 years: Book a reservation at Maxim’s, the storied French restaurant that opened in 1893 and has counted Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Margrethe II of Denmark, Jean Cocteau, Jane Birkin and Man Ray among its patrons. “The place was packed,” Ms. Firestone, 35, said of the night she ate there in late November. Maison Gainsbourg, which comprises his former residence and a separate museum, shop and café, will open to visitors on September 20, according to the official website. But now visitors will be able to see inside, exploring the house to the accompaniment of an original soundtrack made by Gainsbourg’s daughter, actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, and the Soundwalk Collective. Over the past week, in the lead up to the grand opening, Charlotte Gainsbourg has posted a series of photos of the house on Instagram. Anyone planning a visit will have to book ahead, though: Tickets are sold out until until December. The pair quickly became the subject of widespread public fascination, with Gainsbourg nearly 20 years older than Birkin, who died in July.

Birkin told Leitch that Hermés paid her an annual royalty of £30,000 in 2011, which currently works out as $39,000. Years later, the Birkin handbag has taken on a life of its own and is now seen as a status symbol. Some of its pricer models, including the crocodile and diamond-encrusted Birkin bags, can cost as much as $200,000 according to Sotheby's.

Throwing yet another twist into her career is that after Gainsbourg, Birkin was in a relationship with the uncompromising filmmaker Jacques Doillon. The next year, she appeared in a Marivaux play directed by the influential Patrice Chéreau at his Nanterre theater. Despite her trepidation, her performance was a success, and Birkin continued to appear onstage, alternating, as was her wont, between boulevard fare and Euripides.

CNN —Jane Birkin, the British singer and actress who found fame in France, has died aged 76, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported Sunday, citing its sources. She was the inspiration for the famous Birkin bag by French luxury house Hermes. Gainsbourg went on to write “Je t’aime… moi non plus” for Birkin and the song became an international hit that same year. She also managed to carve out a prolific career in the world of music, releasing several records in the French language. Dumas was true to his word and the Birkin bag was introduced in 1984.
